F&O
(Futures & Options)
Learn what F&O trading is, how derivatives work in India, and start trading with Stoxkart's advanced trading platform.
What is F&O
F&O (Futures and Options) are derivative instruments whose value derives from underlying assets like stocks, indices, commodities, or currencies traded on NSE and BSE.
Unlike cash market where you buy shares, F&O involves contracts giving you rights or obligations to buy/sell underlying assets at predetermined prices on future dates.
A key feature is leverage – you pay only margin (10-20% of contract value) upfront, allowing control of larger positions with smaller capital investment.
With Stoxkart's F&O platform, access real-time market data, advanced charting tools, and seamless order execution for informed trading decisions across multiple derivative instruments.
Types of F&O
1. Futures Contracts
- Binding agreement to buy or sell underlying asset at predetermined price on specific future date. Both buyer and seller obligated to fulfill the contract terms.
2. Call Options
- Give buyer the right, not obligation, to buy underlying asset at strike price before expiry. Purchased when expecting prices to rise significantly.
3. Put Options
- Give buyer the right, not obligation, to sell underlying asset at strike price before expiry. Purchased when expecting prices to fall or decline.
4. Index F&O
- Derivatives based on stock market indices like Nifty 50, Bank Nifty, and Fin Nifty. These are cash-settled and among the most actively traded.
Features and Benefits
1. Leverage Advantage
- Control large positions with relatively small capital through margin trading. Maximize potential returns on successful trades while managing capital efficiently across multiple opportunities.
2. Hedging Capability
- Protect your stock portfolio from market downturns by taking opposite positions in F&O. Reduce overall portfolio risk without selling your long-term holdings.
3. Two-Way Trading Opportunity
- Trade from both rising and falling markets by going long (buy) or short (sell). Take positions based on your market view without needing to own the underlying asset.
4. High Liquidity & Flexibility
- Popular contracts like Nifty and Bank Nifty futures offer excellent liquidity ensuring smooth entry and exit. Multiple expiries and strike prices available.
How F&O Works
1. Activate F&O Segment
- Enable F&O trading in your Stoxkart account. Complete additional KYC requirements, and sign derivatives trading agreements before starting.
2. Understand Margins & Contracts
- Check margin requirements displayed on Stoxkart before placing orders. Learn contract specifications including lot size, strike price, and expiry dates for chosen instruments.
3. Place & Monitor Orders
- Select underlying asset, choose futures or options, specify strike price for options, and place orders through Stoxkart's terminal. Track positions and profit/loss in real-time.
4. Exit or Settlement
- Square off positions anytime before expiry by taking opposite positions.
