What is a Demat Account?

A Demat (Dematerialised) Account is an electronic account that holds your securities — stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, and more — in digital form. Just like a bank account holds your money, a Demat account holds your investments.

Before demat accounts existed, investors received physical share certificates. These were prone to loss, forgery, and damage. Today, SEBI mandates that all securities in India be held electronically through NSDL or CDSL — the two central depositories.

Key Point: You need three linked accounts to invest in stocks — a Demat Account (holds shares), a Trading Account (places orders), and a Bank Account (funds transactions). Most brokers open all three together.

A demat account holds your securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds) in electronic form, similar to how a bank account holds money. A trading account is used to place buy/sell orders on the stock exchange. Both are required to trade in the stock market and are typically opened together.
